My husband and I love to travel with our kids and when we pick a destination we try to find unique things about the area to experience, rather than sticking to the ‘touristy’ sites. I would much rather learn about the history and natural plants and animals of a region than visit an amusement park that I can see in many other locations. And FOOD is a huge part of our vacation, no matter where we travel….I make sure to try regional dishes whenever I can and my kids have finally accepted the ‘no chicken fingers at restaurants’ rule that I put in place many years ago! I want them to grow up with an affinity for exotic foods and they won’t if they eat a steady diet of chicken fingers at every restaurant! Making the most out of our vacations requires advanced planning! I try to visit the city’s web sites, ask friends for recommendations and check out travel sites like Gogobot to make my family’s vacation special!
My husband and I took the kids to New Orleans last year for ONE day when we drove to Houston, Texas. That one day was nowhere near enough time to explore a city as rich in culture as New Orleans. We are considering going back again in the spring so that we have more times to really experience the unique culture of the area. While The French Quarter might not be totally appropriate for kids after dark there are some really cool shops and restaurants there that I am dying to visit!
If I could design the perfect New Orleans vacation I would try to avoid the chain hotels and stay somewhere unique like the Iberville Suites. It has all the amenities like a pool and continental breakfast but with a touch more style than most chain hotels. I have spent a lot of time daydreaming about chicory coffee, gumbo, craw-fish and an assortment of other Cajun delicacies! The restaurant finder on the Gogobot website lets you read all about the food that each restaurant offers and you can read other people’s reviews on their own experiences. We went to Cafe Du Monde the last time we were there and I can honestly say that their chicory coffee and beignets are to die for! You cannot experience New Orleans without beignets at Cafe Du Monde!
Next time we go I want to check out the Commander’s Palace Restaurant. It is one of those places that is actually a little upscale and has a dress code and you really need reservations! Now that the kids are teens I don’t have to worry so much about taking them to ‘kid friendly’ restaurants! I can actually get us all dressed up for a meal at a nice restaurant and Commander’s Palace is ranked #6 in New Orleans!
Other than eating and sleeping, what we really want to do is SEE the heart and history of New Orleans at places like Lake Pontchartrain and experience the Haunted History Tours. I am also fascinated with the concept of the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum! I think my kids would really enjoy that…..okay, I admit I am a little curious myself!
I am really looking forward to our trip…I even have a great Zydeco CD to play for the ride to New Orleans….Now, if I just had a few beignets to tide me over till then…
