Small Business Saturday is coming up November 24th! #SmallBizSat

I am starting to realize that the holidays are fast approaching and I am nowhere near ready yet!  While I try hard to shop year round when I find something I like, buying gifts for friends and family can sometimes be tough!  There are many times I resort to Amazon or big box stores to find just the right gift but it always seems a little bit impersonal to me.  I like to shop smaller stores whenever I can and find a gift that is unique and will hold a special meaning to the recipient.  If you are tired of the impersonal gift giving of the holidays you may want to consider shopping on Small Business Saturday on November 24th.  Not sure exactly what Small Business Saturday actually is?  Here is a brief description:

Small Business Saturday is a day for everyone — from the business owners who create jobs to the customers who buy locally — to support small businesses that invigorate the economy and keep communities thriving.  It began in 2010 when American Express founded Small Business Saturday to help small businesses get more exposure during one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year.

As a blog owner, I am always grateful when a company gives ME and my own small business a chance to do promotional work for them.  They could choose a big, well know PR company but they are reaching out to me instead.  I also love that I can show my daughter that she can be a stay at home mom AND have a business of her own!  So many women would love to stay home with their kids but are stuck in a 9 to 5 job.  Turning my blog into a business has shown her that a woman has options when it comes to balancing kids and careers!

There are a lot of benefits to shopping small business!  Here are  just a few:

1.  Shopping small businesses that are close to your home helps keep money within your own communities.

2. There are usually MUCH fewer  people crammed into your local small business which means less stress for you and less time standing in line!

3.  Small businesses often have much more unique items or services than you would find in the mass retailers.

4.  Small businesses tend to have a much smaller carbon footprint!  They are more aware of the costs related to utilities, packaging, and advertising and cut costs (and use less resources) whenever they can!

5. You improve your community by ensuring these unique stores have the finances to stick around!  I would hate to walk around downtown and see a bunch of empty store fronts!

My husband and I love to travel and when we check out a new location we try hard to support the local artists whenever we can.  There is a little town called The Highlands in North Carolina where we have purchased hand made pottery, wooden crafts, and even a beautiful corn husk doll bookmark!  Many of these have been gifts for family and friends but we can’t help picking up something new for ourselves every time we visit!
