When I think about the most enticing travel destinations they are always locations that offer a wide variety of outdoor activities. I don’t really like spending my days at amusement parks or museums, although I have seen my fair share of those over the years. What I really want out of a vacation is to connect with nature, explore the flora and fauna of an area, hike a few trails, and feel the sun on my face. Gulf County, Florida is located in Northwest Florida and offers 43 miles of natural shoreline. There are no high-rises or busy highways to detract from it’s beauty. In one direction you face the Gulf of Mexico and the other St. Joseph Bay. If you are an avid nature lover like my family is, Gulf County, Florida may be your idea vacation destination!
So, what sort of outdoor adventures can you find in Gulf County, Florida? They have amazing bayous, unexpected wildlife encounters and the mysterious Dead Lakes. There are seaside bike trails to explore, kayaks to paddle, stand-up paddleboards and snorkeling. Tupelo honey is a major food product produced in the area….I do love me some honey! The harvest begins soon – late April or early May. In fact, the 24th Annual Tupelo Honey Festival is held on May 17 on the beautiful banks of Lake Alice in Wewahitchka.
Beaches in Gulf County, Florida are consistently ranked in the top ten US beaches to bring your pets on vacation. Leashed pets are welcome on the beach at all times and most rental homes are pet friendly. It is much cheaper to bring your pet on vacation with you than to try to board them while you travel. The ocean surrounding Gulf Coast, Florida not only creates some beautiful beaches but also provides an abundant amount of delicious seafood. When my family vacations we take great pleasure in enjoying the local cuisine and we are HUGE seafood lovers. Generations of families have made their living harvesting fresh fish along these coasts. If you love good seafood as much as I do, be sure to check out a few of the local specialties while you are there. You can even do a little bit of fishing for yourself….Gulf Coast, Florida offers both freshwater AND saltwater fishing for visitors. Personally, I am not much of a fisherman but getting out onto the water in a kayak or with a paddle board sounds like a wonderful way to explore the area!
