One of the things I always try and tell my kids is that foods that have naturally deep and vibrant colors tend to be better for us than those that are bland and dull. This may be a slightly simplified version of Nutrition 101 but it encourages them to look around a bit more closely when we are in the produce department. Choosing red or purple grapes over green ones or pomegranate juice rather than apple juice will help boost the nutrients and antioxidants in your diet. These antioxidants have been shown to have a rather significant benefit when it comes to our overall health. POM recently sent me some of their juice to try out and I love the sweet/tart combination! If you are not familiar with POM, here is some information about them from their website:
POM Wonderful is a global brand committed to innovation and wellness. We grow and market pomegranates and pomegranate-based products that are healthy, honest and essential to the well-being of humankind.
I love the sustainable methods that POM uses in growing their pomegranates! They use the latest drip-irrigation technologies in their orchards to minimize water usage. They use of every single part of the pomegranate…what they don’t juice is used as cattle feed so there is no waste! And they also manufacture their bottles right next to their filling plant to minimize transportation costs (both financial and environmental!) All their juice comes from pomegranates grown right in California!
POM makes a number of different juice varieties, as well as supplements and nutrition bars. The POM original 100% pomegranate juice is one of my favorite juices. There is no added sugar, colors or other juices in it. Here are a few other facts about this juice:
- no added sugars, preservatives or colorants
- good source of potassium
- flash pasteurized to retain both flavor and nutrients
- certified kosher
I also learned something quite interesting as I read about superfruits and our health: The high antioxidant concentration in superfruits may be particularly important to athletes! According to Peak Performance, one potential benefit of antioxidants is the reduction in post-exercise muscle soreness. According to POM, the pomegranate has been valued as a symbol of health for centuries and has been the centerpiece of many traditional folk medicine practices. They have provided over $35M in research money to support further studies of the benefits of pomegranates to our health!
POM Wonderful pomegranate juice has a wonderful flavor…a perfect balance of sweet and tart! Whether you drink it straight up for breakfast of add it to a POMtini at cocktail hour, I think you will really enjoy the flavor!
