With the new year just a few days away, I am going to be doing a big push for healthy eating in my house. Over the last month I have gotten lazy and relied too heavily on quick and easy meals that may not be all that healthy. Too many sweets, too many restaurant meals, and not enough fresh fruits and veggies. DASH Diet Book Review:

The first thing I always do when I pick up a cookbook is do a brief flip through and look for pictures. I love to see bold colors and mouth watering photos of the recipes included in the book and this cookbook has tons. There is a brief introduction to the cookbook that describes what the DASH diet actually is. I don’t usually follow specific ‘diets’ but this one is really common sense. Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, low fat proteins and dairy, whole grains and what I call ‘real’ food. This cookbook aims to improve your health by showing you that simple foods can be incredibly tasty without a lot of fat, salt, or artificial ingredients. The author includes a section on ‘getting started’ to help you understand serving sizes and realistic suggestions on how to replace your current NOT so healthy foods with ingredients that are better for you. It is nice that the author doesn’t expect you do jump in 100% on day one since that isn’t realistic. She recommends small changes over time for better results.

The DASH Diet Recipes

The recipes themselves are divided into simple categories like appetizers, salads, pasta, fish, deserts, etc. There is a section called ‘vegetarian’ which is nice to help encourage people to reduce their overall meat consumption. There is additional information on most of the recipes that include things like nutrition, shopping dips and a little DASH diet tidbit that relates to the recipe. I like that the recipes include ingredients that are easy to find in most major grocery stores. I don’t always have time to run to a specialty store to find odd ingredients just to make dinner. The ingredients are simple, as are the directions although there is a nice range of recipe types. There are some you would call simple family cooking and others that are a little bit more exotic if you wanted to have company.

Overall, I think if you are interested in healthy eating, eating a more natural diet, and DASH diet cooking,  I think this cookbook will really come in handy.
