Giving Tuesday, Social Good and Giving Back with World Vision

This post about social good and giving back this holiday has been sponsored by World Vision but all opinions expressed here are my own.

As we enter into the busiest time of the year for shopping and gift giving, people are starting to whip out their credit cards and make their shopping lists. Kids want video games, grandma wants new slippers, husband has his eye on a fancy alarm clock. These are all great and wonderful gift ideas but what about those people in other areas of the world who are struggling just to survive? Giving the gift of clean water, farm animals, or books for the classroom would be a great way to give back to the less fortunate this holiday season.

Social Good with World Vision

World Vision will be taking part in the second annual observance of Giving Tuesday this year. Giving Tuesday, the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, has a simple goal: after two days focused on shopping (Black Friday and Cyber Monday), it’s meant to be a day to refocus on giving thanks by giving back. Sometimes we get a bit distracted during the holidays with buying and need a reminder that we are truly blessed and should take a moment to give to those less fortunate. Here are a few other ways to encourage the spirit of GIVING this holiday season:

  • Organize a family giving night and have kids select charitable gifts from an organization such as the World Vision Gift Catalog. Talk with your children about how giving back changes lives of children and families living in poverty and that their efforts truly make a difference.
  • Host a house party for friends and family and ask your guests to contribute to a share of a group gift such as a farm animal, winter clothing or school supplies to families in need, or even a water well.
  • After Black Friday and Cyber Monday holiday shopping, consider celebrating Giving Tuesday (12/3) and make meaningful, life-changing gift purchases such as medicine, mosquito nets or a fish pond.
  • Be active in your giving — volunteer at your local homeless shelter or senior living center; cook a meal or bake cookies for an elderly family member or neighbor.

Help where it’s needed most…

AND get a gift for yourself or someone you care about!

  1. Nearly 2,000 children under age 5 die each day from diarrheal diseases caused by unsafe drinking water and spread by lack of basic sanitation and hygiene. This is more than HIV and malaria combined.
