Steps You Can Take to Fight Climate Change and a #Green Twitter Party! #ClimateReality

Throughout my day I come across a number of people. I try to encourage them to live a greener life through example rather than being preachy about it. Nobody likes to be lectured on the evils of plastic water bottles but maybe seeing me use my stainless steel one will make them think twice next time they go shopping. While I think I make a difference in the way some people think, I know there are a lot of skeptics out there. So many people either don’t care about their actions or just don’t believe that they can make a difference. Many people outright deny that climate change, global warming, and other environmental issues even exist. To those people I just say that no matter WHAT you believe…we have only been given one planet and the smartest thing we can do for the survival of the human race is to take care of it, right? Personally, while I think climate change is a natural part of the evolution of our planet I am 100% certain that our actions have made it more severe than it should be. If you are looking for ways that you personally can reduce your impact on climate change, here are a few ideas:

how to reduce climate change

1. Reduce your electricity usage.  Replace traditional light bulbs with energy efficient LED bulbs. Turn off appliances when not in use and unplug them. Run your dishwasher and washing machine on the coolest setting possible and line dry your clothes on a nice day.

2. Reduce your water usage.  Run your dishwasher and washing machine only when full. Install low flow shower heads and water conserving toilets. Fix any and all water leaks in your home. Use your water from cooking pasta or steaming veggies to water your outdoor plants.

3. Recycle everything you can.  There are creative ways to recycle or reuse a million objects around your home. Check out Recycle More for some ideas or just brows around my website. You will find all sorts of interesting ideas like how to recycle old tennis balls and many more useful tips.

4. Reduce the environmental impact of your food.  Choose local and/or organic options whenever you can. Cook from scratch and avoid highly packaged products. Compost your food scraps and learn to garden so you can grow your own fruits and vegetables. When you eat out, take your own plastic container and skip the Styrofoam takeout box. Every little step counts!

5. Teach others whenever you can.  Whether you choose to teach eco friendly lifestyle tips to your kids or lead by example at your inlaws’ house make it a mission to spread the word about environmental causes and climate change. Don’t be preachy and judgmental. Lead by example, educate with consideration, and be respectful. Every baby step counts on the road to going green and lessening your impact on the world around you. I choose to use social media to encourage others to go green and if this sounds like something that would work for you, keep reading about a great initiative that will spread the message all over the internet!

  1. Great tips! Let me add the four biggies: (1) Go without your car, or share it; (2) turn the thermostat in your house closer to the outside temperature; (3) eat lower on the food chain – even switching from beef to chicken makes a big difference; (4) buy less stuff – get creative about year-end gift giving: I’m sure you can think of more interesting gifts than stuff!
