I have mentioned many times over the years that I have a weakness for dessert.  Dinner usually includes a little something sweet at the end and when I find myself cruising the pantry for something to snack on,  my eyes are always drawn to sweets rather than the more healthy options in there.  Getting healthy can be difficult if you have a sweet tooth!  My family is always happy to help me indulge my sweet tooth when I succumb so on Mother’s Day I treated myself to a trip to the ice cream shop.  And yes, I ate the whole thing!

frozen treats

On special occasions like Mother’s Day I don’t worry so much about making healthy snacking choices but what about the other 364 days out of the year?  If I gave into my sweet tooth with an ice cream sundae every day I would never fit into my pants!  In fact, after a year of those things I would not fit into my HOUSE!  So, for the other 364 days a year I try to make sure that the treats I indulge in fit with my goals of getting healthy.  When I was asked to try out a delicious and healthy natural fruit bars from Fruti I was thrilled….a smart way to indulge my sweet tooth without the guilt and weight gain of an ice cream sundae!

I have been wanting to get a membership to Sams Club for quite some time now to help reduce the cost associated with getting healthy and eating right.  Healthy foods are not always cheap but buying in bulk at Sam’s Club will help me stay in budget while still eating healthy foods.  I found a nice selection of nuts, dried fruit, organic granola and even organic veggies at Sam’s Club.  I also found the Chunks O’ Fruti natural fruit bars variety pack.  This is a 16 count package containing four different flavors of the tastiest, all natural l fruit bars I have ever had!

getting healthy snacking

Fruti natural fruit bars are made by the Natural Fruit Corporation and come in flavors like Pina Colada, Strawberry, Caribbean Mix, Strawberry Pina Colada and Pineapple Mango.  They select only premium fresh fruit from around the world for these natural fruit bars. Fruti’s fruit bars contain more fruit than any other ingredient.  Because there is so much fruit, there is no need for added colors or flavors.  I love knowing that there are no artificial flavors or colors in these natural popsicles!  There is also no high fructose corn syrup in them which is very important to me.  There is so much fruit in these frozen treats that they require minimal added sweetener at all.  The small amount that is added comes in the form of natural cane sugar.  They are also non GMO project certified, vegan, Kosher, gluten free and made in a peanut free facility.  A great healthy snack choice if you have dietary restrictions you need to follow.

Buying a 16 count package of these natural fruit bars at Sams was a smart choice because once I got them home my children descended on me like ants to a picnic and quickly grabbed their own personal favorites.  Because this is a relatively large box and freezer space is always tricky to find, Fruti natural fruit bars actually come in four smaller boxes tucked inside the larger package.  Each flavor comes in it’s own smaller box which can be removed and tucked into a smaller spot in your freezer.  I like that I don’t have to worry about how to fit a huge box in my freezer.

When I was at Sam’s Club shopping, I got the change to try out a delicious creation that was being made at one of the demo stations in the frozen food isle.  The woman behind the cart was making a Fruti smoothie with a small amount of plain yogurt and just a touch of water.  It was seriously so delicious I went back for seconds!  Yes, I know, my sweet tooth strikes again but this was a healthy treat so I didn’t feel quite so guilty.  If you want to try the smoothie for yourself or want to see some other creative ways to use these natural fruit bars just check out the Fruti recipe page.   I tried a frozen smoothie with the Strawberry Cream and the Pina Colada and both were creamy and sweet and would make a great summer treat for either me or the kids!

I really loved the flavor of these natural fruit bars and even more, I love the ingredients and the commitment to whole foods that the company has.  My kids are happy to eat neon blue artificially flavored things but that is not the kind of food I like to keep in the house.  Fruti natural fruit bars were a delicious frozen treat that all of us, young AND old (or oldER!) can enjoy! The flavor was nice and sweet and the bars are full of chunks of real fruit that gave it a great texture.  These bars are a much smarter choice for healthy snacking than many other frozen treats on the market.  And they are a MUCH better choice for daily snacking than the gigantic ice cream sundae I splurged on for Mother’s Day.  Something like that might be nice to do occasionally but for day to day treats, Fruti is a smarter choice that will ensure I can still fit into my pants for many years to come!

We all know that we should exercise. Our health is absolutely dependent on it. Well, our pets need exercise too.  According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 53 percent of adult dogs and 55 percent of cats in the U.S. are either obese or overweight. Additionally 22 percent of dog owners and 15 percent of cat owners said their pet’s weight was normal, when it was actually overweight or obese!

Summer is a great time to start exercising with your furry friend. Take a good look at your pet. Could he use more exercise? Could she be in better shape? Let’s all make a commitment to our pets health, longevity and mobility by ensuring they are getting enough exercise!

The first step is to make sure exercise is fun for your pet rather than painful. If your dog or cat is experiencing painful joints you should add a supplement like FlexPet to your pets diet. Exercising can be particularly difficult when suffering from joint pain. FlexPet is an all natural supplement that contains no Genetically Modified Organisms and offers real joint pain relief for dogs and cats. Using FlexPet is a great way to keep your pets healthy and active this summer!

A few key facts about FlexPet:
1. FlexPet is a chewable treat for your pet that is both good for them and delicious instead of being unhealthy pet “junk food” or even worse, some sort of pill that you have to cram down their throat.

2. It is all natural, has no known drug interactions or side effects and is GMO free.

3. Flexcin, the makers of FlexPet, really stand by their product.  You can try a 60 day supply with no financial risk! If you are not completely satisfied all you have to do is return the 2 empty bottles for a full refund, less shipping and handling, of course.

Just like people, cats and dogs need to walk, run, jump and play to maintain an ideal weight and proper musculature. Just like people, as they age these things become even more important.  Develop a routine with your pet that includes both vigorous forms of exercise like toy chasing as well as sustained gentle exercise like daily walks. You could even get creative and make a backyard obstacle course for your pet to investigate and explore. If you notice Fido or Fifi is preferring the sedentary life, a supplement like FlexPet might be just what they need to put the spring back in their step!

Piggy Paint sick day

This past Sunday was Easter and instead of spending it doing an egg hunt with my kids, I spent the morning at the doctor’s office with a sick girl child.  Half way through church, she laid her head on my shoulder and a quick kiss to the forehead told me that she was coming down with something.  Word from the doctor was that she just had a nasty virus….nothing to do but go home and hunker down for a few days.  You know when your kid is sick enough to not be in school but well enough to still feel like doing something?  Well, I was seriously happy to have been sent a whole selection of Piggy Paint natural nail polish to play with because she is home sick today and chomping at the bit for something fun to do.  Piggy Paint to the rescue! Who can feel sick when they have pretty fingernails, right?

My daughter and I have used Piggy Paint natural nail polishes in the past and I love that they are as natural as mud!  Piggy Paint contains no toxic chemicals; it’s free of formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, Bisphenol A, ethyl acetate and acetone.  It is a water based formula that is hypoallergenic and cruelty free.  They have an amazing variety of  vibrant colors that are given really cute names to appeal to little girls like “Sea-quin” (shiny turquoise), “Glass Slippers” (clear sparkle), “PINKie Promise” (glam pink), and “Girls Rule” (bright, shimmery lilac).  Piggy Paint products are  made in the U.S.A. and can be bought at select Wal-Mart stores, www.walmart.com and specialty children’s boutiques nationwide. They also offer a chemical free nail polish remover, cute accessories and really nice gift sets.

I honestly loved the selection of colors that we were sent from Piggy Paint to try out.  My daughter loves bright colors and her very favorite thing to do with her nails is to do every one a different color.  Seems crazy to me but what do I know, right?  I am apparently OLD! The colors are vibrant and bold, some of them shimmery and some more of a solid, matte style.  We used only one coat on her nails and I think they came out great.   I love that these natural nail polishes are odor free.  I can’t stand the smell of traditional nail polishes and I always worry when she is using those.  It can’t be good for a kid to be inhaling fumes like that!  These nail polishes are water based so it does take a tad bit longer for them to harden than traditional nail polishes.  One way to speed them along is to use a hair dryer on low setting to ‘blowdry’ them.  You can sing a few songs to keep little ones entertained while you wait.  Thankfully, mine is old enough to be a little bit more patient…but just a LITTLE bit!

My daughter and I loved spending some time together on her sick day doing her nails.  It made the time pass by a little faster and hopefully just looking at her pretty little Piggy Paint nails will make her feel a tad bit better today.  I think she is crossing those prettily painted fingers that  she is better tomorrow and go back to school.  Staying home with mom is fun, but still not as much fun as hanging out with her friends!

How to Choose Natural Beauty Products #spon

How to Choose Natural Beauty Products #spon

This natural beauty products post has been sponsored by Salacia Salts but all opinions expressed are mine alone.

Over the past few years I have tried to make the switch to natural beauty products.  Sometimes I find a product that I really like and it is easy to ditch the chemical laden, artificial stuff.  Other times, I buy one brand after another with pitiful results.  I keep trying new natural beauty products, though, because I feel it is important to reduce my exposure to certain chemicals that are prevalent in traditional beauty products.  I thought I would put together a few simple suggestions for those of you who are  just starting to switch to natural beauty products.  I hope they are helpful.  If you have any brands that you really love or any tips that you would like to share about finding natural beauty products please feel free to leave a comment!

How to Choose Natural Beauty Products

choosing natural beauty products

1.  Look for products that use essential oils:  Artificial scents can trigger allergic reactions and asthmatic attacks in a number of people.   Many of the of the synthetic fragrances on the market today are derived from petroleum by-products. Essential oils are extracts of natural products and a better choice when looking for natural beauty products.

2.  Avoid chemical dyes:  Do you really need your soap to be neon blue or your shaving cream to be green?  Many traditional beauty products contain artificial dyes to make them more eye catching.  Look for product that are either white (undyed) or use only natural colors.  Just because something is pink, doesn’t mean it works any better than something that is plain old white.
3.  Read the BACK label:  Don’t be fooled by what the front label says.  Sometimes a product may say ‘contains essential oils’ but then when you start reading the ingredients you find that there is a whole lot of other stuff in the product that you DON’T want.  While you cannot memorize all of the ingredients you should avoid, the basic rule of thumb is that if it sounds like a chemical, it probably is!  Don’t be fooled by the marketing hype that goes on the front label. Natural beauty products will usually contain recognizable ingredients!

4.  Choose organic if you can:  The organic seal on a beauty product takes a lot of the guess work out of choosing natural beauty products.  While organic doesn’t mean it is perfect, it is a better choice than most traditional beauty products on the market right now.

5.  Consider making your own:  Many beauty products can be made very simply from ingredients in your pantry.  Oatmeal, olive oil, chamomile tea, cucumbers…they are all incredibly tasty but also make very good natural beauty products.  I recently made a Coffee and Brown Sugar Shea Butter Scrub that works amazingly well for exfoliating and moisturizing.  The web is full of great recipes for homemade natural beauty products  and by making your own you not only control the ingredients but usually can save money, too.

6.  Find local businesses and crafters to support:  Supporting local businesses is always a great choice, especially when you can find one that makes natural beauty products.  Many times you can find small, local crafters at your local farmer’s market or just do a Google search for your state and the type of product you are looking for.  I found a wonderful natural beauty product company called Salacia that is not too far from me here in Georgia.  They make salt based natural beauty products and I was very happy with the ones I received.

Salacia Salts is a bath and body care product line made with natural ingredients and regional botanicals.  Their products are hand-mixed and packaged in reclaimed packaging and wine bottles from local Savannah businesses.  I was sent the Midnight Garden Hand Scrub, which contains dried rosemary pieces to exfoliate and Rosemary essential oil as a natural cleaning agent.  The base is 100% Atlantic Sea Salt and it is biodegradable and vegan, containing no sulfates or parabens. I also received the Magnolia Salt Soak which also contains Atlantic Sea Salt and essential oils.

Natural Beauty Products: Salacia Salts

I really loved both of the product that I received from Salacia Salts to try out.  The Midnight Garden Salt Soak has a nice scent and the salts dissolved easily in my warm bath.  They left the water lightly scented, although did not leave a lingering scent on my skin.  I did notice that the product page listed ‘fragrance and essential oils’ as the source of the scents.  I think I would rather see one that contained only essential oils but I had no skin reactions or issues using this product, despite my very sensitive skin.  The Midnight Garden Hand Scrub was a great way to clean my hands and it left them feeling soft and smooth with just a touch of scent.  If you like to garden or cook and need to get dirt and smells off your hands, I think this product will definitely help!  A little goes a long way, too!  The scent was light and refreshing and the flecks of rosemary in it made it look very attractive.

Choosing natural beauty products is a great way to reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals.  If you are wondering whether a certain product is considered safe, go to Safe Cosmetics (a division of Environmental Working Group) and type in the product name.  They rate products from 0 to 10 (0 being the safest and 10 having the most undesirable chemicals) so that you can see if  your natural beauty product is as safe as you thought it was!

Homemade Shea Butter Scrub with Coffee and Brown Sugar

Homemade Shea Butter Scrub with Coffee and Brown Sugar

I have a serious weakness for luxurious bath products.  I have baskets and drawers and part of a closet dedicated to products for pampering myself with.  I have seen a number of shea butter scrub recipes online and they all looked incredibly decadent.  I decided I wanted to learn how to make a shea butter scrub at home and it was really very easy!  The first hurdle is to find some shea butter but I actually found 100% Organic West African Shea Butter on Amazon AND it has free shipping.  Very nice!  I browsed around a few sites for inspiration, including A Delightful Home.  I took ideas from an assortment of different places and just winged it when I needed to!

A couple of notes about this shea butter scrub!  This is intensely moisturizing and exfoliating.  It is meant to be used in the shower where you can easily rinse it off with hot water.  You will not need a moisturizer on your skin when you get out. Really!  If you find it to be too rich you can follow up the scrub with a washing using your regular bar soap.  Your skin will be very smooth and well moisturized after using this scrub.

Also, you can use whatever exfoliators and scents you want to personalize your shea butter scrub to your own preferences.  Add almond oil instead of olive oil and add almond extract along with the brown sugar, use ground herbs and essential oils, or a course salt and some sort of fruity scent.  The variations are endless.

If you want to give this a try, here is my tutorial on making a homemade shea butter scrub:

Coffee and Brown Sugar Shea Butter Scrub

organic shea butter scrub

Ingredients:

1 cup shea butter
1/4 cup coconut oil (melted)
1/4 cup olive oil
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup finely ground coffee
1 TBSP coffee extract
2 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

Step One:  First thing you need to do is measure out your shea butter.  It has the consistency of a firm cookie dough so just break off pieces and press them firmly into a measuring cup.  Place this into the top of a double boiler set on low or just put a pot of water on the stove on low heat and place the shea butter in a glass bowl on top of it. The site I looked at for reference said to soften but not melt the shea butter but others say to melt and chill so that is what I did.  Just stir frequently to help it melt.  Place the glass bowl in the refrigerator to firm the shea butter up a bit.  Stir frequently and chill for about an hour.  When it is thickened, move on to the next step.

Step Two:  Whip your shea butter.  You will probably need a good stand mixer for this but a hand held set of beaters will work, too.  Do not try this by hand…you need to beat it for about 4 or 5 minutes at high speed to incorporate plenty of air into the shea butter.  You will end up with something that looks like this:

shea butter scrub at home

Step Three:  Combine your olive oil and melted coconut oil in a glass measuring cup and pour it very slowly into your shea butter from above.  You will probably have to remove the beater occasionally and scrape the sides.  I found that it wasn’t quite as airy and light as I wanted it so after combining all of the oil I put the whole thing in the fridge for 5 minutes or so to chill.  Then, I removed it and whipped it up some more.  You want about 3 to 4 minutes of beating at high speed to really incorporate the air into the oils and butter.  Right before you are done, add the coffee and vanilla extracts and beat a few seconds to mix.  Here is my homemade shea butter scrub at this point:

shea butter scrub with coffee

Step Four:  Add in your exfoliating brown sugar and finely ground coffee.  I used about 3/4 cup brown sugar and 1/3 cup finely ground coffee.  The coffee is a harder exfoliator than the sugar so adjust your quantities according to your skin type.  Make sure you have broken up all the lumps before adding to your butter/oil mix.  Using a wooden spoon, just gently fold in the sugar and coffee.  Mix until combined.

Step Five:  Package as desired!  If you are giving this as a gift, place in a pretty jar and sprinkle the top with a little extra brown sugar and coffee for decoration before putting on the lid and adding some ribbon and/or a label.  If you are just making this for yourself, you don’t have to get quite so fancy!  This will make about 3 cups of shea butter scrub and a little goes a long way!

That’s it!  Making a homemade shea butter scrub is actually pretty easy and in the shower it is absolutely incredibly smelling!  My skin feels soft and smooth and I don’t have to use a separate moisturizer when I get out.
