I have been tossing around the idea of asking for a break maker for Christmas because I absolutely love the smell and taste of homemade bread. The biggest drawback to a breadmaker though (besides price) is that it takes up so much room on the kitchen counter. I have gotten better at bread making over the last several years but I rarely do it because it takes so much time. I love seeing artisan bread in bakeries…the rough look, crunchy crust and tender inside just make me want to slather it in butter and eat the entire loaf. So, when I was asked to review The New Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day

My Review:

The New Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day is truly a beautiful cookbook. Hardcover, hundreds of pages, a beautiful dust jacket with a mouthwatering loaf of bread on it, and loaded full of useful information and recipes for artisan bread. The first several chapters are all about ingredients, equipment, tips and techniques. If you really want to make artisan bread on a regular basis you need to spend some time investing in the right supplies.

There is a ‘master recipe’ section that will be your day to day breads and how to make the dough, store it, and work the rising into your schedule. This is the part that I do think is a tad bit misleading when it comes to the title. The 5 minutes is your active work time. You can make up the dough in 5 minutes and store it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. When you need it, grab the dough and shape into a rough loaf. No kneading or punching down of the dough is necessary. But, you do still have to let it rise. Not that it is a lot of work to leave a lump of dough on the counter, though. You can have artisan bread on your dinner table if you plan your schedule right with very little work on your part.

The collection of artisan bread recipes in this book is extensive. Everything from simple white bread to slightly more complicated homemade pretzels. There is a chapter on gluten free breads, which I appreciate since I do have family that visits occasionally that is gluten intolerant. There are gorgeous color photos scattered throughout and it is helpful that the author included ingredient measurements in both weights and volumes.

This is definitely a beautiful cookbook for anyone wanting to explore artisan bread making. I will be sharing my artisan bread creation from the cookbook this week so stop back by and see what I created!
