Keeping Teens Active for Better Health

I’m sharing these tips for keeping teens active thanks to Playtex® Sport® as part of a sponsored post for Socialstars #PlaytexSportSquad. All opinions are my own.

I remember back many years ago when my children were young. There were days I was exhausted just from chasing them up and down stairs all day. Weeks went by where all I did was watch them run in and out of the back door. I seriously considered putting in a revolving door so I could stop yelling at them about slamming the darn thing over and over again. They were incredibly active kids and needed no encouragement to go outside and play. Fast forward 10 years and now I am the mother of two teenagers who often resemble sloths in their extreme desire to remain stationary. Keeping teens active is a challenge but vital to their long term physical and emotional health.

Keeping Teens Active for Better Health

My daughter has tried a number of sports and activities over the years looking for the right ‘fit’ for her personality. She tried soccer when she was younger but spent more time chasing butterflies than she did the soccer ball. We bought her a nice bike, which went mostly unused due to the hills and traffic in our neighborhood. I drove her to tennis lessons for years despite her lack of interest in the sport. We finally found gymnastics…and she has been tumbling her way to better health ever since. It wasn’t easy to find the perfect sport for her but I’m glad she has found an activity that really fits her perky personality.

Why is keeping teens active important?

Teens are under an incredible amount of stress. They live chaotic lives filled with academic pressure, peer pressure, and dozens of other worries that flit across their minds daily. Teens are worried about how to look right, act right, and be accepted by their peers. Keeping teens active allows them to have a physical way to blow off a little bit of steam. Physical activity on a regular basis helps boost their self-esteem and reduce stress. It also promotes a positive self image and in a time when body shaming is a huge problem, this could really help boost your teen’s confidence.

Keeping teens active is also a good way to help them achieve long term health. The habits they form NOW will carry with them through adulthood. Leading a physically active lifestyle reduces their chance of high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and many other debilitating illnesses.

How to keep teens active without nagging?

Obviously, keeping teens active is important for their long term health, right? So, how do moms turn their sloth like teens into active, healthy teens without a whole lot of nagging? Here are a few tips to consider if keeping teens active is a challenge in your own family:

1.  Remember, group sports are not right for everyone:  Here in the south there seems to be a lot of emphasis placed on team sports. Football, tennis, soccer…they are all very popular in my area. But not all teens are made for group sports. Let your teens try lots of different activities to find just the right fit for their personality.

2. Keep it fun:  Don’t become THAT parent who spends the whole game yelling at the coach and their kid from the sidelines. Your angst will turn a fun pastime into yet another source of stress.

3. Make their workout time a family affair:  Hit the gym together or take a hike as a family. Keeping teens active is much easier if the whole family is participating!

4. Know how much is too much:  Teens are busy and sometimes fitting in exercise isn’t always easy. Don’t expect them to make time for a 2 hour workout every day. As long as they get 30 minutes a day on most days you are well on your way to a healthier teen.

5. Provide them with the right gear:  No teens wants to be the only one on the team without the right footwear. You also don’t want your son on the football field without protection for sensitive parts of his anatomy. Girls who play sports will need to find just the right feminine hygiene products that will provide superior protection, even when they are most active.

Keeping teen girls active, even during their period

When I was a teen, my period lasted a solid week and my daughter seems to be following in my footsteps. Staying active during your period is a great way to tackle those pesky cramps and out of control emotions so it is vital to keep up your active lifestyle during that time of the month.

When my daughter first got her period she flat out refused to try tampons but after the first summer swim party during ‘that time of the month’, she figured out how to use them really quickly! She has learned to keep a selection of products in her backpack and purse for middle of the day emergencies. She has an app on her Kindle so she can keep track of her cycle. And we have an open line of communication between us for any questions that may arise. It isn’t always fun to talk about embarrassing topics with your daughter but at least I know she is getting the right information!

Playtex® Sport® Tampon & Liner Combo Packs and Playtex® Sport® Pads allow your teenage daughter to remain active, even during her period. The Tampons & Liners Combo Pack really comes in handy in our house. It is designed for dual form users and offers two kinds of Sport® Level Protection™ together in one convenient package. Only Playtex® Sport® has a 360°™ design and FlexFit™ technology that moves the way you move. These are great tampons for swimming, biking, running or whatever your activity of choice is.

  1. I think it is wonderful that your teen keeps active! Keeping active and always walking and working out helping me keep my body in shape, and stress down when I was a teen..if only I could apply those habits now!

  2. Not just teens, but pre-teens as well. We try to instill this into both of our daughters and keep them enrolled in at least one physical activity all the time.
