Can you ever have enough apple recipes? NO!

I have lived in the south for about 20 years but still consider myself a New Englander at heart. I choose walnuts over pecans and apples over peaches every time I can. This time of year, apples are in season and I find myself eating them daily.

However, once we get into winter and spring, apples may be in the grocery store but they don’t taste all that great anymore. I’d rather eat NO apple than eat one that is dry and mealy! Instead of fresh apples, I choose dried apples and I just discovered freeze dried apples from Homegrown Organic Farms.

How awesome is it that you can keep this organic freeze dried fruit right in your pantry for up to 18 months and it has zero preservatives!

I have snacked on freeze dried fruit right out of the bag before but there are lots of other great uses for them. You can use them in salads, pack them in lunches, top off your yogurt or throw them in a backpack.

You can also BAKE with organic freeze dried fruit! Get more information about Homegrown Organic Farms freeze dried fruit and keep these tips in mind when using them:

  • When using freeze dried fruits as a replacement for fresh fruit, increase the amount of liquid in the recipe by at least ¼ cup. Try this in my apple bread recipe if you don’t have fresh apples.
  • Do not expose freeze dried fruits directly to the surface of a pan. When making pancakes, pour the batter in first, then sprinkle with freeze dried fruit.
  • Need smaller pieces? This can be done simply by crushing them while in a sealed plastic bag.
  • Turn them into a powder in a small food processor and add to marinades, batter, smoothies, or energy bites like this one.
  • Use organic freeze dried fruits in flavored gelatin to add texture without added water that will inhibit setup of the gelatin.
  • Freeze dried fruit can be slightly more tart than fresh fruit. Adjust sweetness as needed.

  2. This would be a great snack for my daughter. She isn’t big on peanut butter and that seems to be in most energy bites, this is a great option for her since it doesn’t have that.

  3. There are some balls like this that I make but not as flavorful sounding, the kids love those. I think making these will be a nice twist to my other ones to add variety! Thanks 🙂
