Fish Oil Versus Omega 3 for Heart Health

This discussion about Fish Oil Versus Omega 3 for Heart Health has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #NatureMadeHeartHealth #CollectiveBias As I move through middle age, I am amazed at the number of health issues that I need to concern myself with.  I never worried too much about my metabolism, nutritional supplements or heart health in my 20s and 30s.  Maybe my mortality is more of a pressing concern now that I am in my 40s?  Or, maybe I am just more educated now about the need to … [Read more...]

Making Smarter Snack Choices and a Strawberry Smoothie Bowl Recipe

These tips for making smarter snack choices and strawberry smoothie bowl recipe have been sponsored by General Mills, Cascadian Farm and Annie’s.  All opinions expressed here are my own. Back in the olden days, food was rather uncomplicated.  You grew it, harvested it, cooked it, and put in on your plate for mealtime. Fast forward a few decades and we are busier and lack the space and ability to grow all of our own food.  Eating has become more complicated. Despite time and budget constraints, it is possible to turn back the clock to a simpler … [Read more...]

When I heard about the warm lemon water benefits being touted by health gurus, I was intrigued. I had heard about the lemon water side effects as well but that didn't stop me from giving it a try. Go ahead and enjoy the cookies and candies this week but once January hits, these tips for clean eating are going to come in handy.  I am all for enjoying the abundance of holiday food this month but it definitely isn't the norm when it comes to my diet.  Although, I hate the word 'diet'.  I prefer to consider these clean eating tips part of a general healthy lifestyle.  While I follow my healthy lifestyle eating tips, hopefully I will lose a few pounds, tone up, and improve my overall health.  But, it isn't a DIET.  That four letting word is … [Read more...]

How to Maintain a Healthy Digestive System During the Holidays

This post about how to maintain a healthy digestive system during the holidays has been sponsored by Culturelle.  All opinions are my own. I absolutely love the holidays and a big reason for that is all of the food.  Pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, cookies, and eggnog are all high on my list of holiday favorites.  Of course, holiday food doesn't always settle well with my stomach.  Many people who have digestive issues struggle quite a bit when it comes to maintaining a healthy digestive system during the holidays.  I thought I would share a … [Read more...]

Healthy Lunch Box Tips for Kids and Parents

My kids start back to school in a few weeks. Summer is going by quickly! I'm constantly looking for healthy lunch box ideas. Even though they are teens, they still prefer to bring lunch from home.  I'm glad! I'm not a huge fan of the school lunch program in my area.  This is the largest school district in Georgia and there is no actual cooking done on site.  Prepackaged grilled cheese sandwiches with white bread and fake cheese are reheated in little plastic bags and they call that healthy.  Shortcuts are taken and questionable foods are served … [Read more...]

What Does Clean Eating Mean and How Hard is it To Do?

This 'What Does Clean Eating Mean?' discussion was sponsored by Eat Smart as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own. I am generally not the type of person to follow strange 'diet' trends.  I am not going to eat grapefruit at every meal to lose weight.  You will not find me making 'raw food pancakes' because I have decided that all food we consume should be uncooked.  The only 'food philosophy' I really follow can be summed up by a quote from Michael Pollan who says 'Eat real … [Read more...]

Best Trail Food For Your Next Outdoor Adventure

My husband and I love to head out into the woods and go hiking whenever we can.  Our children are teenagers and are forced to come with us as often as possible.  Of course, being teenagers they would rather be playing video games or gossiping with friends but I think it is important for them to get out into the woods occasionally and appreciate nature.  One way to keep cranky teenagers happy in the woods is to feed them frequently.  Of course, that also keeps mommy happy, too, so we bring a lot of trail food on our adventures in the wild.  I … [Read more...]

Check This List of All Natural Sweeteners Before You Shop!

I am putting together this list of all natural sweeteners for people who are determined to ditch fake chemicals in their food. Back when I was younger, I was obsessed with calories and was always looking for 'light'  and 'diet' foods.  My goal was to be able to eat whatever I wanted to without taking in any calories.  Diet Coke, light yogurt, and all sorts of other foods that were loaded with artificial sweeteners made up a good portion of my diet.  I didn't worry about what sort of chemicals were being put into my overly processed food...I was … [Read more...]

Teaching kids to eat healthy without losing your mind

Many years ago, I had a picky eating 2 year old.  I researched how to start teaching kids to eat healthy and found the same advice over and over again.  Just ignore it and they will eat healthy on their own eventually. I'm not sure what those authors were smoking but my kid would have happily lived on chicken nuggets and French fries every day if I let him.  I decided I was done with modern parenting advice and made it my goal to have my kids eating a healthy and natural diet with the occasional treat thrown in for sheer enjoyment.  Teaching … [Read more...]

Beat Holiday Weight Gain with These Simple Tips

The older I get, the more I realize that the food I put in my mouth has a lasting impact on my health.  While I certainly kick back and enjoy the occasional hot fudge sundae or bowl of chips, I try to make those a sporadic part of my diet.  Eating a rainbow of colors, cooking from … [Read more...]
