Elmer’s First Day App: Say Thankyou, Make a Donation and #BagItForward #Cbias

Last Updated on

My children started school a few weeks ago and we are already up and running with a ton of school work. This is my last year having a child in the elementary school and it makes me a little bit sad! I have had a wonderful experience throughout the years at this particular school and will be sad not to be a part of the community there any more. We have loved all of my kids teachers but one in particular has really touched our hearts. Both my son and daughter had her for first grade and I firmly believe that she is the reason my kids both ended up in the gifted program. She challenges her students to go above and beyond what is expected of them and brings out each child’s true potential. School budgets are tight across the country right now and I know that a lot of the supplies our teachers use in their classrooms come from their own personal funds. So many children nowadays can’t afford the supplies they need for school and no teacher can look at a child in need and not offer to help. So, when I got the chance to #BagItForward and make a donation to a special teacher, I knew exactly who I was going to surprise with a few much needed school supplies!

#BagItForward with Elmer’s!

Elmer’s makes it easy to Bag it Forward to help out a needy child or a special teacher using their 1st Day App. How does the Elmer’s 1st Day App work? After you download the free app onto your phone it is really easy to use. First,  snap photos of your kids on their 1st day of school. Then,  personalize each photo with quotes or captions and organize them by date, child or album. You can give your friends and family access to your photos to share their special moments. The great thing about this app is that for every photo uploaded, Elmer’s will donate one product to the Kids In Need Foundation! They will donate  up to 200,000 products! This app is also a great way for teachers to capture and share photos of classrooms, art projects, events etc. throughout the school year.

Once I downloaded the app onto my iPhone, I headed off to my local Walmart to start shopping for our Teacher Donation Kit. Every year, teachers need the same basic supplies…pencils, paper, an assortment of glue and crayons, paper, tissues, and stuff to keep the room clean. I decided to stick to these basic supplies when I put together my donation. I was surprised to find that my local Walmart had already started taking down the back to school stuff and putting out football and game day items! But, I still found a ton of school supplies, including lot of Elmer’s products. Most of it had been moved back into the normal school supply isles but there was still quite a nice selection. I never realized how many items Elmer’s makes! While we have used their basic liquid glue and glue sticks for years I was surprised to find things like double sided sticky tape and glitter glue, too! Kids use a ton of supplies like this in the classroom putting together an assortment of projects so hopefully our donation will come in handy!

After my cart was full of all the things I wanted to donate I grabbed a reusable fabric basket to put it all in and headed to the checkout. You can see my whole shopping trip in my Google + Album…I really had a lot of fun picking out items. I tried to pick a mix of craft supplies, schoolwork supplies and things to keep the classroom clean. Teachers are always in need of the basics…you would be amazed at home many pencils and glue sticks a kid can go through in 9 months of school. Here is the kit we gave to Mrs. Murphy:

When I got home from my shopping trip, I laid out all of our purchases and asked my daughter to put together a colorful sign to go with it. Emily was really excited about helping out with this project. She still has fond memories of her time in first grade and stops by to visit all of her old teachers on a regular basis. Teachers love keeping in touch with their students throughout the years to see how much they change! She is quite the little artist!

Once we had our donation kit put together and decorated it with the sign we were ready to surprise our favorite teacher. Since both my kids had her for first grade, I thought my older son would like to be a part of the project, too. He hasn’t been back to the elementary school in a couple of years and was eager to see Mrs. Murphy again. I think our Teacher Donation Kit was much appreciated and I know that she will put it to good use in her classroom. I feel good knowing that not only am I helping support a teacher I love but that because I uploaded a photo to the Elmer’s 1st Day App a donation will also be made to the Kids In Need Foundation. This is a Bag it Forward mission times two!

If you are heading to Walmart, consider downloading the Elmer’s 1st Day app and putting together a school supply donation for a needy child, special teacher, or an organization that helps families in need. Everyone should Bag It Forward every once in a while….it is an easy way to give back! While you are there, keep in mind that for the entire month of August, you can visit the Walmart Photo Department to get a free 5 x 7 digital print! What a great way to capture your child’s first day of school photo for FREE!
