Easy Goat Cheese Toasts Appetizer Recipe

This goat cheese toasts appetizer recipe is so incredibly versatile I am going to share a few different flavor combinations so you can tailor it to your own personal tastes. Goat cheese is one of those flavors that people either love or hate. I am in the LOVE category and unfortunately my husband is in the HATE category. It does have a rather strong flavor so you could also make this easy appetizer recipe with cream cheese, which will be a bit more mild. Just make sure that it is softened to room temperature for easy spreading. If you are looking for more goat cheese recipes, check out my blueberry basil tart. It is delicious and easy to make!

How to Make Goat Cheese Toasts

I am going to give you a step by step summary of how to make this goat cheese appetizer and at the end you can find a printable recipe. The recipe is more of a guideline to follow but it make make it easier to actually see something in front of you.

Step One:  Choose your bread and oil

I chose a dark pumpernickel bread but French or Italian bread are also popular options. Slice it relatively thin (similar to regular off the shelf sandwich bread) and brush both sides with a tad bit of your preferred oil. I used walnut oil for a nice nutty flavor but olive oil works just as well. Place your bread on a cookie sheet and bake in the oven at 375 degrees for about 3 to 4 minutes per side. Keep an eye on it. You want it toasty but not too crispy. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. Spread a few tablespoons of goat cheese on each slice.

Step 2:  Choose your herbs

Fresh herbs abound in my backyard herb garden so I had plenty to choose from. You could use dried herbs but they are nowhere near as flavorful or as pretty as fresh ones. Chop your herbs but not too finely. Having actual leaves on your goat cheese toasts looks very attractive, I think!

Step 3:  Choose a topping

Here is where your goat cheese toasts get really exciting! Choose the fresh fruit, vegetable or nut that you want to go on top of your appetizer recipe. Fruit like berries, sliced pears or peaches, are a great choice. Sliced tomatoes are also delicious. Chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans go well on top of your goat cheese toasts as well. The options are practically endless. Just look to see what is in season or on sale this week and get creative!

Step 4: Put it all together

Assemble your goat cheese toasts to your liking. Just pile the fruit, veggies and herbs on top of your toast. If you want it warm, you can put it back in a preheated oven for a minute or two.

  1. I have never tried goat cheese, I know many love it. I would most certainly try this appetizer when entertaining guests this Summer. Simply because I love cheese and would love to try goat cheese for the first time 🙂
