How to Make Mint Simple Syrup

Homemade mint simple syrup is easy to make and a great way to use fresh mint. All you need are fresh mint, water, and cane sugar.  While you can it with peppermint extract, I don’t really recommend it.  You will get the best flavor using fresh mint, preferably right from the garden. 

Once you learn how to make mint simple syrup, there are a ton of ways to use it.  From Kentucky Derby mint juleps to summer mint mojitos, there are tons of easy cocktail recipes to make with it.

Not a cocktail fan?  Pour your peppermint simple syrup over cantaloupe or sweeten up your morning coffee.  There are a ton of recipes using mint syrup and it stores well in the refrigerator.

Growing Fresh Mint

Mint is one of the easiest plants to grow in the garden but you have to be careful to keep it well tended. Mint is fairly invasive and will quickly spread outside of it’s designated growing spot.

Some people plant mint in submerged pots to keep it contained or build a plastic ‘wall’ underground out of plastic edging

Ways To Use Mint Syrup

This simple syrup can be used for a number of different things. It is a great way to sweeten homemade iced tea and is a key ingredient in the Mint Julep, which is the traditional beverage of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby.

We are loyal Kentucky Derby watchers and love to watch the horses run while sipping a tasty mint julep! Not into mint juleps?  You can also use it in your morning coffee or drizzle it over a warm chocolate cake for a minty sweet flavor.

 

How To Make Mint Infused Simple Syrup

To make this mint simple syrup just grab a few clumps of mint from the garden and rinse well. Pluck the leaves off the woody stem. You can use them whole or chop them smaller if you want.  Just make sure you are only using leaves and not stems.

You need about 1 cup of slightly packed mint. Other than that, it contains just sugar and water. Put everything into a pot on the stove and less than 10 minutes later you have mint simple syrup. Let cool before storing in a tightly sealed glass container for 2 weeks or so.

Mint Simple Syrup Recipe

This peppermint simple syrup recipe is easy to make and perfect in mint juleps or mojitos.  Just three simple ingredients is all it takes to make strong  mint syrup from all your fresh mint!

How to Make Mint Simple Syrup

Fresh mint, cane sugar and water are all you need to make this strong mint syrup from fresh mint!

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 3 minutes
Additional Time 30 minutes
Total Time 38 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup lightly packed mint leaves
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a medium sauce pan
  2. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar
  3. Reduce heat to a simmer
  4. Simmer without stirring for 2 to 3 minutes
  5. Remove from heat
  6. Let sit 30 minutes
  7. Strain into a glass container. Press solids lightly to release flavor.
  8. Let cool completely and cover with lid
  9. Store in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 weeks
  10. Use to sweeten tea, coffee, cocktails or whatever you please!

  1. I can fresh fruit and am thinking about using the mint simple syrup in it. Also have you tried substituting agave for sugar?
