Pumpkin Donuts with Cinnamon and Sugar

At first as the weather cooled off and summer said goodbye, I was sad. I would miss the fresh berries, watermelon, and ripe, red tomatoes. But then I remembered that along with cooler days and longer nights, fall brings us apples and pumpkins and other delicious goodies! I have been scrolling through Pinterest looking for unique pumpkin recipes and boy are there a lot of them! I decided to treat my kids to some homemade pumpkin donuts this week.

The kids get mighty sick of cereal every morning and threaten to skip breakfast altogether when I bring out the overnight oatmeal too often. Do you know what pumpkin donuts smell like while they are baking? Heaven! Pure and simple heaven!

Glaze or Cinnamon and Sugar?

Depending on your own preferences, you can either coat these homemade donuts with cinnamon and sugar or make a homemade glaze.

I actually thought that a maple glaze would taste delicious on them but thought it might be a tad too sweet. How that is sweeter than cinnamon and sugar, I don’t know. But, the cinnamon and sugar coating was delicious.

Homemade donuts are actually not hard to make at all as long as you have a donut pan. I bought the Wilton donut pan from Amazon last year and it works wonderfully.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1/3 cup butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup milk
  • For the Cinnamon sugar coating:
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the pumpkin, vanilla, milk and melted butter. Whisk together until smooth.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir just until combined.
  4. Add batter to donut pans, being careful to not over fill them. You only want to fill the donut shapes about half way to allow room for rising.
  5. Bake in a 350 degree preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes
  6. Remove from oven and let cool 5 minutes before removing from pan.
  7. Make the cinnamon sugar mixture by adding the cinnamon to the sugar and mixing until uniform.
  8. Brush each donut, top and bottom, with melted butter and dip in the cinnamon/sugar mixture
  9. Set aside to dry slightly
  10. Serve and enjoy!
