Today’s Think about this Thursday post has been written by Jo from Jo’s Health Corner. I would love it if you could check out her blog and say hello! She offers some great suggestions for obtaining optimal health without going broke! Here is some helpful information that she has put together about the benefits of essential oils!
Benefits of essential oils
Essential oils are a wonderful addition to a natural medicine cabinet at home. They are very versatile, and I love that I can use the same bottle for multiple things. I use the same essential oils for cleaning, skin care, healing, and pet care. The essential oils’ versatility makes them fairly inexpensive to use since one bottle goes along way and it can be used for so many things. Essential oils are also more potent than herbs. One drop of essential oil equals about thirty cups of herbal tea in terms of concentration.
So, what are essential oils?
Essential oils are extracts that are distilled from various plants such as trees, aromatic herbs, and flowers. In the plants they act as powerful attractants to insects to ensure pollination. They also provide protection for the plant by repelling harmful insects. The essential oils are more than just a pleasant aroma. Historically they have been used to kill viruses, fungi, and bacteria. Many oils are anti-fungal, antiviral, and antiseptic, and may combat infectious disease by killing off viruses, bacteria or other pathogens.
What are the advantages?
There are many advantages of using essential oils. One advantage is the many ways essential oils can be administered in. Two of the most popular methods of administration are topical application and inhalation. When applied topically and inhaled, the essential oils are almost immediately absorbed into the blood stream. Inhaled oils don’t go through the digestive system so they work immediately in the body.
The unique body and mind connection
The fact that the essential oils can act on both the mind and the body is what makes them unique. The aroma can be stimulating both psychologically and physically. The aroma can also be very calming and sedating. As you can see, inhaling the aroma is very powerful. Aromatic stimuli of the limbic system cause the release of neurotransmitters, including pain-reducing encephalin, pleasure- producing endorphins, relaxing serotonin, and stimulating noradrenaline.
Think about this
When you think about all the amazing benefits that essential oils have, you realize that you get a lot for your money when you buy an essential oil. One essential oil has several therapeutic properties and act on both mind and body. You pay roughly 20-40 dollars for a high quality essential oil that has multiple therapeutic properties. You can use the same bottle for cleaning the house, purifying the air, for healing, and for skin and body care. According to this article, a year’s treatment with several medications could cost up to $3000 back in 2005. Doesn’t it sound like a better deal to learn more about the healing essential oils and other natural remedies?
Safety and caution
This information is for educational purposes only and it is not meant to prescribe. Essential oils are safe to use as long as contraindications have been researched prior to use. As always, consult with your health care practitioner if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or suffer from any medical conditions. Some oils are contraindicated in certain conditions, so check out this essential oil safety page to make sure the oils are safe for you.
