What to do to Protect the Environment Even if Lawmakers Won’t

I try very hard not to share politics on my blog very often, however, teaching you what to do to protect the environment is kind of the entire reason I started this blog. Sometimes we have lawmakers in office who have an inkling of an idea about how important clean air, safe water, and a strong food production system are. Other times we have shortsighted idiots in office who’s only goal is the almighty dollar. When lawmakers fail to act, it’s up to citizens to get involved and I wanted to share with you a few things I have done in the last couple of weeks to make my voice heard. Will it accomplish anything? I can only hope, pray, and keep my fingers crossed. But sitting on the couch doing nothing definitely won’t accomplish a darn thing. So, I hope you join me in the next 4 years (let’s hope it doesn’t last that long!) and make our voices heard, even if lawmakers try to silence us every step of the way.

Take Daily Action

Taking a small action, every day, is all that is needed to make your voice heard. Not sure what to do to get involved? Join the Daily Action Facebook group or sign up your cell phone for a Daily Action text message. They will give you small, daily actions that will tell you how to get involved in the fight to protect the environment. These are actionable things you can do every day. The text messages you receive are based on your zip code, and they send phone numbers for senators, email addresses for governors, and tons of other local things you can get involved with as well as many national actions. Today’s Facebook message was about banks that are directly funding the Dakota Access Pipeline project so you can move your money somewhere else. If you don’t know what to do to protect the environment, these two groups are a great place to start.

Fight for Science

Science is real, people. I worked in scientific research for years and those scientists researching climate change aren’t just making stuff up for the heck of it. Yes, climate change happens even without humans on the earth. But, you know what? The rate of climate change since we started developing things like cars, businesses, and technology has skyrocketed. And you know what? If you don’t believe in climate change? Fine. But we have exactly ONE planet on which to live. Even if climate change is a totally made up concept, don’t you think it makes sense to protect the one and only place we have to exist? Without this planet, we are in serious trouble so how about we let scientists figure out how to protect the earth from humanity? Want to help scientists and support their research? Join the March for Science Facebook Group. Right now it is just a small group but it is growing daily and they are trying to organize a march on Washington to make their voices heard. Cutting funding on scientific research and gag orders on the Environmental Protection Agency are not the way to go if we want to protect our climate.

Donate, Donate, Donate

If you are wondering what to do to protect the environment, keep in mind that nothing can happen without financial donations from individuals. Especially in an age where small minded lawmakers are cutting federal funding, environmental research needs your financial support. We have been making more and more donations to environmental causes that are important to us and even just a few dollars can help when you add up donations from millions of people. Research environmental charities and help them fund the scientific research that may very well help them save our planet from extinction.

I don’t have high hopes that the current US government is going to do anything to protect the environment. In fact, I am pretty sure they are going to do everything in their power to completely destroy it. However, I, myself, can take action and fight them every step of the way. I really hope you join me!

  1. Like a house is built by joining bricks together, in the same way contributing your part to environment is a small step in protecting it, if like bricks we also hold our hands together and take a stand for it together, then we can also build a beautiful earth for our future generation. Thanks Diane, for sharing this post with us!
