My husband went to graduate school in Houston, Texas so for 7 years we got to live right on a bayou where egrets feasted on crawdads and the mosquitoes were the size of small birds. It was a totally new experience for me, having grown up in the burbs of New England! I ate alligator and went to crawfish boils and visited Louisiana for a tour of the swamps. I learned to love Cajun food like gumbo and etouffee and then we moved to Georgia and I lost all that tasty goodness! So, I bought a cookbook and hit an international market or two and learned to cook my own! If you are a lover of all things Cajun you will enjoy Taste of Treme!

I love it when I find a cookbook that not only has amazing looking recipes but is also interesting to read! If you aren’t familiar with New Orleans or their style of cooking you will learn a lot from reading the introduction and the random text boxes scattered throughout the book. The author describes the difference between Cajun and Creole, gives you some simple recipes to recreate the spices in these dishes and then teach you how to make a roux. Then, he delves into the recipes themselves which are just delicious sounding and each one has a slightly whimsical name to give it even more character. Everything from Who Dat Potato Salad to Uncle Lionel’s Chicken Fried Steak. These recipes are all easy to follow but not particularly simple. Cajun and Creole foods are not known for being quick and easy. According to the author the jazz is slow to keep you busy while the gumbo simmers! You can also browse through the history, culture, artwork, and photographs of New Orleans while your gumbo simmers to really get a feel for area.
Taste of Treme is a nice hardcover cookbook that not only gives you an incredible selection of Cajun/Creole recipes but also offers an amazing look into what truly makes New Orleans unique.
