Green living has been a passion of mine since I first found out I was pregnant 20 years ago. It didn’t happen all at once and I’m not living on a sustainable farm wearing hemp and using a composting toilet. However, I have made small and realistic changes in my life that I HOPE reduce my carbon footprint. With Earth Day coming up next month, I wanted to share some advice for my fellow bloggers. There are a few things to keep in mind as you craft your next article on eco friendly living. If you want to join the ranks of green bloggers, keep reading for some tips that might help. In addition, make sure to purchase a ticket to ShiftCon Atlanta this year where sustainability is center stage!

Tips for Green Living Bloggers
Earth Day shouldn’t just be a chance to capitalize on Pinterest traffic or people Googling sustainable living tips. I would LOVE to see more green living bloggers on the internet! However, keep these blogging tips in mind before you sit down at your keyboard.
Start Small:
Don’t make massive changes to your life in one fell swoop. That is a great way to set yourself up for failure. It is also a great way to lose some loyal readers along the way if you aren’t careful. You want to bring your readers along with you on the journey. Not have them wondering if you were replaced somehow by a pod person. Discuss your journey with your readers and keep them up to date with the green lifestyle tips you are incorporating into your life.

Be Honest:
Keep your blog real as you journey to green living. I see green living bloggers who try to make it seem like they have a zero carbon footprint every day. Maybe they do, however, it seems a bit unrealistic to me in this day and age. As Earth Day approaches, teach your readers about what has worked for you and what hasn’t.
I will tell you right now that I refuse to give up my traditional feminine hygiene products and switch to a menstrual cup. I am not using reusable toilet paper. And while I am passionate about sustainability, I still use paper towels to clean up dog vomit. Green living bloggers should be a reliable resource for their readers rather than a picture of perfection that no one can ever achieve.
Understand What Green Living Means
Every year, I see the same Earth Day craft making it’s rounds on Pinterest. You have probably seen it, too. All those dirt cups with gummy worms in them? Those PLASTIC dirt cups with gummy worms in them? That plastic cup’s sole purpose was to create a craft to teach children about the environment? Not really a great sustainability message.
That not so eco friendly craft is seriously one of my biggest Earth Day pet peeves this time of year. If you want to join the ranks of green living bloggers, be mindful of what you promote as sustainable. Recycling plastic water bottles is sustainable, however, buying them for the sole purpose of using them in an Earth Day craft is not a great choice.
