Traveling to Australia? Don’t Miss the Wildlife!

My husband has one of those jobs that periodically sends him to exotic locations to work. Over the past few years he has traveled to places both near and far. He has visited Canada, Thailand, Australia and a number of other faraway destinations. He and his colleagues always try to plan one day when they can take a few hours to explore the country and it’s culture. He has visited river markets in Thailand and a wildlife sanctuary in Australia. By far, traveling to Australia was definitely his favorite experience. The plants, animals, and scenery were so uniquely different than what he was used to here in the US. While we can see a lot of these animals in zoos it was awe inspiring to him to see them in their natural environment. Here are a few places you might want to consider to explore the wildlife if you are traveling to Australia:

Traveling to Australia

1. Billabong Wildlife Sanctuary:  This outdoor park is full of Australia’s native wildlife and you can even interact with them. There are koalas to hold, kangaroos and wallabies to feed,  and a ton of other exotic experiences. Perfect for getting up close and personal with some of the wildlife that is native to the land down under! Don’t miss the kangaroos if you are traveling to Australia!

2. Magnetic Island:  There are some beautiful views on this island and it is a great place to actually see koalas in their native setting. There are several restaurants that allow you to eat your lunch while enjoying the ocean views. Bring your hiking boots to get some exercise climbing some of the trails on the island. If you are feeling adventurous, take a guided Sea Kayak tour!

3. The Bird Walk: My husband used to work in the Houston Zoo’s bird department and we are the proud owners of a very noisy Sun Conure. Birds have always fascinated us and you can see an amazing selection of birds at The Bird Walk. They have a wide variety of both Australian and International bird species. It is located in beautify Canberra which is the capital city of Australia. If you are looking for places to stay, this is a great choice. Choose one of the many hotels in Canberra and rent a car for exploring. You will never run out of things to see…just time to see it all!

I am a firm believer in learning about the culture, people and animals of an area I am vacationing in. You can see a mall or an amusement park anywhere but how many people can say they got to hold a koala bear? If you are traveling to Australia, please remember to take time to explore the wildlife of the land down under!
