Having grown up in New England along the shores of Long Island Sound, I learned to love seafood at a very early age.  Maine lobster, clam rolls with homemade tartar sauce, and just about every type of fish you could imagine with a squeeze of fresh lemon.  Back then, nobody really stopped to consider the sustainability of their seafood choices.  Fish was a staple and we assumed it would always be plentiful.  Nowadays, I have become far more concerned about the effects my food choices have on the environment.  I try to make sure that the seafood I purchase is sustainably harvested to ensure that MY kids will be able to enjoy it when they grow older.  Fish is extremely good for us so finding healthy tuna recipes that feature sustainable caught tuna like Ocean Naturals will go a long way to reducing your carbon footprint.

Ocean Naturals uses only wild, sustainably caught tuna and the only other ingredients you will find in that can are a touch of salt and either water or olive oil.  No artificial fillers or additives that you can’t pronounce!  They only harvest tuna species that are currently plentiful and limit the number that they harvest so that the population numbers remain stable.  They use catch methods that have minimal impact on the surrounding environment and only harvest from areas that are monitored by regulatory groups who can help maintain the long term health of the region.  Using Ocean Naturals tuna in your healthy tuna recipes is a smart choice for your health as well as the health of our planet.

For my recipe,  I purchased Ocean Naturals Skipjack tuna in water at my local Walmart. I am always happy when I find eco friendly food choices there!   I had honestly never heard of Skipjack tuna before but according to the information on the Ocean Naturals website it is caught in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean and is very plentiful.  I can learn all sorts of interesting information about my tuna using their product code search box.

How do you find out where your tuna was caught?  Just flip your tuna can over and enter the 6 or 7 digit code in the box and hit enter!  In seconds you will see a map and everything you would ever want to know about this tuna, even the name of the captain in charge of the fishing vessel!  Talk about details!  The tuna I am using in my healthy tuna recipes this week comes from an area off the coast of New Zealand.  If you want to learn about your own can of tuna, just head over to the Ocean Naturals website and enter the product code.  If you are using your mobile phone there is a QR code on the box so just use a QR code reader and you will go right to the website!

Since I am always looking for dinner recipes that are quick and easy, I decided to create a soft tuna taco. I really love the flavor of fresh fruit salsas with my seafood but if you are pressed for time you can buy a store bought variety instead.  The filling for your tuna taco can really be whatever you enjoy…fresh spinach with guacamole or iceberg lettuce lettuce and canned corn.  I love recipes that are flexible and a ‘top your own tuna taco’ night can be a fun change of pace.  Next time I have in mind some chopped apples and candied pecans!

Use Bold Flavors in your Healthy Tuna Recipes!

I grew up with heavy, calorie dense, high fat tuna recipes.  Tuna casserole was a staple in our house!  However, you can really lighten up your meal and create healthy tuna recipes with a few easy steps.  Skip the mayo on your tuna sandwich and add slices of avocado.  The creamy texture of the avocado is perfect with tuna.  Add bold flavors like cilantro, garlic and jalapenos and you can pretty much skip the salt completely in your recipe.  And don’t smother your recipe with cheese…just sprinkle a bit on top.  Feta with crushed peppercorns was my choice this week.    Honestly, tuna is an incredibly versatile  food that I always keep on hand in the pantry.  Forget to thaw out your meat?  No problem!  Just open the pantry and there is dinner!   Definitely an item I never let run out.
