DIY Gift Box Ideas that Save Money and Reduce Waste

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Tom’s of Maine for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

With Earth Day coming up soon, I hope that everyone is taking a few minutes to think about ways to reduce their carbon footprint. How many times have you purchased wrapping paper or a fancy gift bag to give someone a gift in? Is that really necessary?

Is it possible that you could save yourself some money and repurpose something you have at home instead?

Do you have any idea how much cardboard and paper I recycle every week? Instead of recycling your empty boxes, have you considered ways to reuse them instead? When I was asked to partner with Tom’s of Maine for an Earthday upcycling project, I knew this would be a perfect fit.

Tom’s of Maine is a brand I use every day and I am always happy to drag out the paint and start crafting! Especially when there is no glue gun required. Those things are dangerous in my hands!

Upcycled DIY Gift Box Ideas

How many times have you thrown away something that could be used again? Think about how many gift bags have you purchased to give gifts to friends and neighbors. How many gift cards have you given to people in a card when a pretty homemade bag would have been just the personal touch that it needed?

You can save money and reduce waste by upcycling the boxes that come with your Tom’s of Maine soap and toothpaste!

New Uses for Cardboard Boxes!

There are many ways to upcycle soap boxes or toothpaste boxes. All you need is some paint and/or a few craft supplies and embellishments. I have several cans of spray paint in my art closet, in addition to an amazingly large collection of Washi tape.

I found several other crafty items and it took only a few minutes to put together some DIY gift box ideas for this project. To get started, just remove the Tom’s of Maine product for use. Then, tuck the ends of the box inside. Soap boxes are a perfect size but if you cut the toothpaste box in half, you can get two boxes for the price of one!

Paint to the Rescue!

You will need an assortment of paint. I found that spray paint works better than brush on craft paint since it seems to go on lighter and cover the area better. You may need to use a couple of coats of spray paint. Just do multiple light coats and let it dry in between.

Spray paint is amazing for upcycled crafts so I have about 6 or 8 different colors in my art closet. Stock up at the craft store when you have coupons!

Invest in Washi Tape!

One option to cover your DIY gift boxes is to use Washi tape. It comes in an amazing variety of colors and is easy to use. If you want to cover your box with Washi tape, use a base coat of white paint first so that the words on the box don’t show through the tape.

Then, just wrap in one or two different colors or patterns and you are all set to go!

Make sure that you have an area set aside in your home to store a few things that may be able to be reused again. That way, you always have an empty box or two when you need it. I have an art closet with things like coffee cans, egg cartons, scraps of material, and an assortment of other supplies for upcycled crafts. You would be amazed at how many creative ways there are to reduce your waste output.
