How to Maintain a Healthy Digestive System During the Holidays

This post about how to maintain a healthy digestive system during the holidays has been sponsored by Culturelle. All opinions are my own.

I absolutely love the holidays and a big reason for that is all of the food. Pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, cookies, and eggnog are all high on my list of holiday favorites. Of course, holiday food doesn’t always settle well with my stomach. Many people who have digestive issues struggle quite a bit when it comes to maintaining a healthy digestive system during the holidays. I thought I would share a few tips that will help you enjoy your favorite foods without reaching for the upset stomach remedies after a big meal.

How to Maintain a Healthy Digestive System

There is a lot of edible temptation going on over the next couple of months. But, keep these tips in mind and your digestive system will run so much more smoothly!

  • Know your body:  I know that too many high-fat foods tend to send my stomach into a tailspin. If you have a particular type of food that triggers an upset stomach, avoid it as much as possible.
  • Limit certain foods:  If you really need to eat that one food you know doesn’t agree with you, stick to a very small portion!
  • Exercise:  Exercise keeps you more regular. Push away from the table and take a walk after dinner before you dive into dessert.
  • Eat more fiber:  Don’t avoid the fresh fruits and veggies because they aren’t as tasty as pie and cookies. Fiber will help keep you regular.
  • Minimize stress:  Stress causes serious stomach upset. Try to minimize it as much as possible. Add meditation to your routine this month if at all possible.
  • Slow down: My best tip on how to maintain a healthy digestive system this month is to eat SLOWLY. Too much food, too quickly, will cause upset stomachs.
  • Eat a balanced diet: Pumpkin pie does not count as a fruit OR a vegetable. Make sure your diet contains all the food groups and your stomach will thank you.
  • Avoid or limit alcohol and caffeine consumption: Too much alcohol or caffeine is not good for your stomach. Try to limit how much of it you include. Choose a glass of water occasionally, rather than a soda. And my homemade eggnog recipe is delicious but should be an occasional treat!
  • Take a probiotic daily:  Our schedules during the holidays are hectic but try to remember to take a probiotic every day to maintain digestive health.
