Indoor Air Pollution Solutions for Your Home

This post about indoor air pollution solutions for your home is sponsored by Honeywell but all opinions are my own.

Breathing is one of those things that humans can’t really live without. The air we breath is vital to our long term health and survival, right? But, did you ever stop to think about how clean the air is in your home? Think of all the indoor air pollutants that float around in our bedrooms and kitchens. Fumes from your nail polish remover, mold from the house plant soil, and dander from the dog all result in poor indoor air quality in our homes. However, all is not lost! There are several indoor air pollution solutions than can help improve indoor air quality. I will share a few of my own simple ways to improve indoor air quality and my recent experience with my Honeywell HEPA filter.

Keep out the outdoor pollutants:  Our homes have enough indoor air pollutants of their own without dragging in more from outside. Keep a large mat by each door and have people wipe their feet and/or take off their shoes before coming inside. A door mat helps reduce the amount of dirt, pesticides, and other pollutants from getting into your home. One upside to this is you will have to dust less, which is always a good thing in my mind! Since setting up the Honeywell True HEPA Allergen Remover in my living room I notice much less dust on my furniture!

Keep a healthy level of humidity:  Dust mites and mold love humidity. With my mold allergies, controlling humidity inside is hugely important. You want to keep the humidity of your home at about 30%-50% and that is tough here in the humid south! In order to reduce humidity, don’t over-water plants, fix all leaky faucets, vent your dryer to the outside of the house and keep the window open and a fan on when showering.

Run a HEPA filter:  One of the easiest indoor air pollution solutions is to have a HEPA filter running in your home. (HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air). This will help trap a lot of the pollutants that are causing poor indoor air quality in your house. Pollen, dust mites, animal dander and other particulates that are too small for you to see get sucked right up into the filter, never to be seen again! Make sure you follow the unit directions for changing the filters and there will be TWO filters to change. The prefilter that traps larger particles and the HEPA filter that captures the very smallest particles. I have been using the Honeywell True HEPA Allergen Remover for several months and it has really helped with my allergies!

Ensure proper ventilation:  You would think that sealing up your home would improve air quality but it really doesn’t! Radon is one indoor air pollutant that can be incredibly dangerous. Radon comes from the natural decay of uranium found in nearly all soils. Any home can potentially have a radon problem. The Environmental Protection Agency offers a “Consumer’s Guide to Radon Reduction” if you want to learn more about it and get your home tested. In the meantime, open doors and windows when the weather is nice. Using a HEPA filter to control dust particles and allergens will allow you to increase ventilation in your home without having too many particulates in the air.

Be cautious with strong odors:  Many products emit Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) than can contribute to indoor air pollution. If you choose to do indoor painting, choose a low-emitting paint that has been third-party certified as VOC free. Do not idle your car in the garage or those fumes can easily make their way indoors. Skip the non stick Teflon pans when you cook dinner and open the windows when using strongly scented cleaners. And definitely do not smoke cigarettes inside your home! (or ever, really…but definitely not if you are looking for indoor air pollution solutions!)  The Honeywell True HEPA Allergen Remover  has a Turbo feature designed to help remove strong odors from your home. Perfect for when I accidentally burn dinner or want to do a DIY project like upcycling the chest I found at my neighbor’s garage sale!

I have been using the Honeywell True HEPA Allergen Remover since February and I have been very impressed so far. It is incredibly quiet, which means I can run it while the TV is on with no problems at all. The filters were very easy to put in and the unit is available in three sizes for medium, large, and extra-large rooms. I chose the extra large capacity one since our downstairs is rather open and it is a lot of air to filter!

The Honeywell True HEPA Allergen Remover  has a very contemporary design and a simple touch screen allows you to tap the setting that you need. You can choose sleep, germs, general, allergen, or max – and the air purifier does what it needs to do. I really loved the germ feature when I got sick in February. I set it up in my bedroom with me to control those airborne germs!

The HEPA filter captures up to 99.97% of microscopic airborne particles, as small as 0.3 microns, from the air that passes through the filters–that’s 250X smaller than the width of a human hair! It is perfect for allergy sufferers like me. The HEPA filters capture airborne grass, tree and other pollens, dust, smoke, pet fur/dander, mold spores, bacteria and virus to help you better enjoy all seasons. Coming from someone with chronic allergy and sinus issues, I can tell you that a HEPA filter is a must in your house!
