I am a label reader when it comes to most of the food that I eat. I like to be able to recognize the ingredients in a particular product and have it free of artificial stuff I can’t pronounce. (Except for the occasional bag of Cheetos…I don’t even want to know how they get them that bright orange color!) Many of the sauces and spreads that are on the market today have preservatives, MSG, colors, flavors and other additives that I prefer to avoid. Homemade condiments are much healthier for you because they are made with fresh, natural ingredients. In an effort to be more of a ‘do it yourself’ kindof girl this year I was excited to receive a review copy of Homemade Condiments: Artisan Recipes Using Fresh, Natural Ingredients. This simple little cookbook about homemade condiments is full of tips on how to choose the freshest ingredients, equipment you will need, information on shelf life, and even a few creative ways to use the condiments that you create. The author even discusses how to grow a condiment garden, which as an avid gardener I am thrilled to see! The recipes are very simple to follow with most having only a handful of ingredients. There is a wide selection of flavored ketchups, barbeque sauces, mustards and an entire chapter on flavored oils and vinegars. Each recipe has a section at the bottom that discusses creative ways to use it. Things like marinating shrimp, toppings for pancakes, dips for vegetables, etc. There are so many ways to incorporate homemade condiments into our diet it is amazing. There is a section at the end that discusses giving homemade condiments as gifts which is nice if you want to impress family and friends with your kitchen skills!
Overall, this is a compact little book that is filled with tons of information on how to make homemade condiments. I will be exploring a few recipes over the coming weeks so stop back by to see what I create!
