When I was younger, staying thin and healthy was fairly easy for me. I ate whatever I wanted and had plenty of free time (and energy!) to exercise. Then I had 2 kids….and turned 40…and I started noticing a few extra pounds sneaking on. I found myself skipping dessert for the first time ever and had to force myself to get up and get some exercise now and then. And those sneaky pounds still haven’t come off. YET! My New Year’s resolution is to pay more attention to what I eat and to increase the amount of exercise that I get so I can drop the extra weight. Knowing my own personal disposition, I have a feeling this won’t be a simple thing to accomplish and I have looked to technology to give me a helping hand. The My Fitness Pal App offers a number of different services that will be guiding me on my weight loss journey over the next few months. This app will really make my New Year’s Resolution to get healthier more achievable!

The unique aspect of My Fitness Pal is that it is not a one size fits all program. Just like every single person is different, so are people’s dietary and exercise needs. What works for one person won’t necessary work for everyone. My Fitness Pal lets you customize your settings to work for YOU. My Fitness Pal has a website you can use but there is also an app that is downloadable for both iPhones and Androids so you can take it with you wherever you go. You create one profile that is accessible from both your phone or your computer so they are linked together.
The My Fitness Pal app offers a number of different types of assistance for your weight loss goals. There is an extensive database of foods available to search through so you can keep track of the number of calories you have consumed. Not only are there general things like a banana or popcorn but you will also find a number of specific BRANDS (Snyder’s pretzels, for example) and even a few restaurant foods as well. Yes, you should avoid McDonald’s hamburgers when on a diet but if you DO stop for one on the way home from work, don’t forget to log it into your My Fitness Pal app!

My Fitness Pal doesn’t just track how many calories you have taken in. Weight loss means you have to work out, too. While I often struggle with finding the time or energy to exercise, it really is an important part of getting and staying healthy. You can search through the My Fitness Pal database for the type of exercise you are doing and add it to your profile. If you do the same thing every day of the week, just choose from your your most frequently used exercises. My Fitness Pal will tell you how many calories you have burned and compare it to your caloric intake to show you your progress. At the end of the day, if you want to know if you can have a snack while you watch TV, check your app…have you burned off enough calories to justify it? If so, then go ahead and munch! If not, step up the exercise routine tomorrow.

As time goes by and you start losing weight you can track your progress using the My Fitness Pal app, too. It will give you a summary of your weight for any given time and you can even enter in measurements for neck, waist and hips. Sometimes I have to remind myself that getting in shape isn’t always about weight LOSS. Muscle weighs more than fat so while I may not lose pounds on the scale, I am hoping to lose inches around my waste! Swim suit season will be here soon and I shudder at the thought of a bathing suit right now! Hopefully, by the time summer gets here the My Fitness Pal app will have helped guide me to where I want to be in terms of the way I look and feel.
