I received a copy of Raw Food For Dummies for review. As I try to eat healthier I find myself interested in a number of different diet concepts. Some people go for high protein, low carb diets. Others choose to give up meat and/or animal based products. Some will only eat light and low fat foods. I recently met someone who was a raw vegan and the concept was fascinating.
How does one start a raw food diet? Are you left eating carrot sticks and fruit every day? Is it possible for raw food to be a bit more complex and interesting? I have learned quite a bit from Raw Food for Dummies about what it means to live a raw food diet and why we should consider this type of diet to help improve our health. Check out my post on foods you should eat raw for better health.

Raw Food for Dummies Review:
Like all of the For Dummies books, Raw Food for Dummies is more than just a cookbook. This book is perfect for any individual that is interested in learning more about the raw food diet but has no idea how to get started. Raw Food for Dummies gets you into the basics of exploring the raw food lifestyle. It teaches you how to start on your journey from day one. Throughout the book, you will notice symbols in the side bars that will teach you about nutrition. They give you a handy tip or two, or help you identify and avoid potential problems.
What is a raw food diet?
The introduction gets into what exactly a raw food diet is and the drawbacks and concerns about cooking your food. In some raw diets, light steaming of foods is actually acceptable depending on what food it is and the temperature involved. You WILL actually get plenty of protein if you follow the right sort of diet. The protein will all be plant based and not animal based. There is very helpful information about planning ahead and eating on the go. Eating at restaurants is also discussed. A raw food diet is challenging away from home but this book has some good information to help you NOT starve if you end up eating out.
Raw food recipes
Raw Food for Dummies includes a sample menu for the first month of your diet. There are a ton of recipes to play around with. The section on gear and gadgets is helpful since raw foods may need to be prepared in certain ways. High speed blenders, juices, etc are all very helpful in a raw food diet. Half of the book is recipes and the other half is a how to book. It’s a nice balance of the two. The recipes themselves include something from just about every category. Start out slowly with raw smoothies and juices and then move into more complicated entrees and desserts. Few of them have more than 7 or 8 ingredients. Some require advanced planning for soaking nuts or grains. Pick your recipe out early and read through it carefully.
Raw Food for Dummies final thoughts
Overall, Raw Food for Dummies was a great resource. I won’t go completely raw but definitely see the advantages of including recipes like this in our everyday lives.
