So, you are well on your way to being green in 2012, right? You have mastered the 3 R’s of living an ecofriendly life by reducing the amount of water your household uses, re-using your plastic baggies, and recycling your junk mail. But, did you know that there is a whole other way of decreasing your impact on the world around you called upcycling? What is upcycling? Essentially, it is the process of converting useless products into something of better quality or a higher environmental value. You take trash and turn it into treasure! Hipcycle is a one stop shopping website that offers hip, upcycled products that are not only durable and well made but create a bit of a design statement at the same time! If you have never heard of Hipcycle, here is a little bit about them from their website:
Our goal here at Hipcycle is to offer upcycled products that are as attractive, durable, and otherwise as desirable as traditional equivalent products (if not more so). We also strive to offer products that are priced about the same as regular high-quality products. We don’t feel that just because something is a “green” product that is means you have to make a choice between helping the environment and getting what you want.
Hipcycle uses waste products from all over the globe to create functional items that you would use in your every day life. The materials they incorporate into their designs would otherwise end up in landfills. Because the materials vary from one batch to another, the final products will not always be identical. The items you buy from them will truly be one of a kind! But, don’t worry…they guarantee you will be satisfied with your purchase! Hipcycle works with a number of small business manufacturers so not only are you keeping trash out of landfills when you shop with them, you are also supporting small business!
So, what type of products can you find at Hipcycle? I spent some time browsing around their unique selection and came across this set of bookends made from recycled records! My husband LOVES his records and this would be the perfect way to help display them on a shelf or book case! Since Hipcycle uses just about every type of material (glass, fabric, paper, wine barrels, chopsticks, etc) the type of products they offer is quite extensive! Office supplies like a pen made from old computer motherboards or a business card holder made from old washers. They even offer upcycled furniture made from reclaimed wood! Whether you need housewares, garden items, office products or furniture, Hipcycle probably has something unique to choose from!
Right now, they have a great deal going on for their upcycled doormats. If you are tired of little wet feet tracking mud through your foyer you can purchase a mat from them at 20% off for the entire month of January. They also offer free shipping on orders of $99 or more.
Keep in mind that while the three R’s are important when trying to live an ecofriendly life, we also need to find a creative way to get rid of the trash that we DO produce. What better way than to upcycle it?

Love this! I’m a fan of upcycling. I started upcycling when I figured out how to solve two problems: too many old or mismatched socks, and my dog tearing the stuffing out of his toys.
old stuffing + cheap replacement speaker + mismatched socks = NEW DOG TOY.
