Create an Eco Bathroom You Will Love!
We bought our home 12 years ago and each year I try to come up with a few ways to make it a more sustainable living space. Whether it is composting in the kitchen, setting the heat a few degrees lower, or buying organic sheets for the bed, there are a lot of ways to reduce your home’s carbon footprint.
We as a society spend a lot of time in the bathroom. And if you have teens like I do, you may spend a lot of time ARGUING over that! I thought I would share a few eco friendly bathroom ideas that will help you create a more sustainable home.
Some are easy and others take a bit more effort, but each little step we make to a greener bathroom is a step in the right direction! Whether you just want to repurpose your old toothbrush or do a complete eco bathroom remodel, rethink your bathroom choices for a smaller carbon footprint.
How to make your bathroom eco friendly
There are a couple of things to remember when it comes to these eco friendly bathroom ideas. You want to reduce your use of resources and choose sustainable products whenever possible. And remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day. Make small changes when you can and invest in a few key purchases as you have the money.
Learn how to reduce water consumption:
Reducing the amount of water your bathroom uses is a HUGE step to greener living. Install a low flow shower head and a lower water usage toilet. Turn the water faucet off when you brush your teeth and reduce your shower time.
If you have leaks, get them fixed. This is one of my favorite eco friendly bathroom ideas because it also helps reduce your water will and saves you money!
Choose Green Bath Products:
Your skin is amazingly absorbent and everything you put on it is taken up in little bits into your body. That means all those chemicals in your shampoo, soap, shaving cream and bath wash are all getting absorbed into your system.
Look for products that contain natural ingredients, essential oils, and plant-based extracts rather than harsh chemicals. Look at the ingredient list. If you can’t pronounce the ingredient, find a different brand or make your own bath products instead.
Make your own homemade shaving cream and check out my green shaving tips. Ditch the harsh chemicals and choose natural cleaners. Choosing eco friendly bathroom ideas like natural cleaners and homemade beauty products helps keep chemicals out of our water cycle.
Plan Your Bathroom Remodel Carefully
Bathroom remodeling is a great time to think about the long-term sustainability of your home. Wall and floor tiles made from natural materials are the best choices for a greener bathroom.
Eco friendly bathroom ideas for walls could include not just natural tiles but also low odor, eco friendly paints. Showers made from real stone tile are beautiful and very long lasting.
Carpet is a bad choice for bathrooms since they get stained easily. You can use wood flooring made from bamboo if you prefer a floor style other than tile. Read more about the pros and cons of bamboo flooring if you are considering a switch.
Choose Recycled Toilet Paper:
Most of the toilet paper on the market today is bleached and made from virgin wood pulp. Consider buying toilet paper that is made from 100% recycled material so that NO trees are harmed to make it. Many grocery stores now offer recycled toilet paper, however, you can get a really great deal on recycled toilet paper on Amazon as well.
Choose bamboo towels rather than conventional cotton:
Cotton is one of the most pesticide-heavy crops on this planet and those pesticides end up right in the cotton towels you use to dry your skin and wash your face. Choosing bamboo towels is one of the easiest eco friendly bathroom ideas you can choose.
Next time you are in the market for a towel set, just choose bamboo or organic cotton towels if you don’t like bamboo for some reason.
Buy A Tankless Water Heater
Hot showers feel great, but it takes a lot of energy to heat the water. Replace your water heater with a tankless water heater to lower energy costs. Tankless water heaters use 20 percent less energy on average than traditional water heaters. This is a great way to save money so you can buy MORE eco friendly bathroom products!
Remember, creating a more sustainable home is a long-term project. Make small sustainable changes regularly rather than a drastic overhaul that may be costly an unnecessary. Like these eco friendly bathroom ideas? Pin for later!

hope it helped give you some inspiration!
I love your eco friendly bathroom ideas! I always love hearing new ways to repurpose and I second bamboo towels. They are so soft and they naturally stay fresher.
Cool ideas! Thank you!
Another thing I really want to suggest is replacing the shower curtains with a glass door. This completely changes the look of the bathroom and adds luxury to it. Plus, the lifespan of glass shower doors is longer, and they are easy to clean with green products.
That is a great tip, thanks!
