Hot tub health benefits and how hydrotherapy helps improve health

What are the benefits of being in a hot tub?

I have spent a lot of time in hot tubs over the years, trying to ease my chronic pain and reduce inflammation.  One of the reasons I chose the gym I did was access to a hot tub!  If you are considering buying a hot tub but aren’t sure if it will benefit your health, here are a few things to consider:

  • Hot tub benefits for weight loss: Obviously, watching what you eat and exercising more are key to weight loss.  However, according to the LA Times, you burn 3% more calories sitting in a hot tub compared to sitting on the couch.  That isn’t much, BUT, hot tubs also reduce stress.  As a result of less stress, humans also do less stress EATING, which may help you shed a few more pounds.
  • Hot tub benefits for your skin:  The high temperature of the water opens up your pores and helps draw out toxins.
  • Minimize pain with hydrotherapy:  Whether you suffer from arthritis or are just trying to ease a pulled muscle from your latest run, hydrotherapy can ease your aches and pains.
  • Does a hot tub help blood circulation? YES! I have dealt with circulatory issues for years. Soaking in hot water causes blood vessels to open. This allows blood to flow more easily,  and improves circulation throughout your body
  • Soaking in the tub improves sleep:  If you have difficulty sleeping, a soak in the hot tub may be just the thing you need.  Hot tubs improve relaxation, which reduces the concentration of stress hormones in your body that not only interfere with sleep but also may result in weight gain and anxiety

Is it OK to hot tub everyday?

If you have access to a hot tub regularly, daily hydrotherapy is incredibly beneficial.  While an occasional soak in hot water is good for on the spot relaxation, regularly sitting in a hot tub will provide more long term results.  Hot tub benefits like reduced pain and inflammation, better sleep, and long term stress reduction will require more frequent use.

Keep in mind that hot tub water may dry out your skin with extended use.  This is especially true if the water has chlorine in it.  Make sure to apply a light lotion to your skin after drying off to replace those natural oils lost during your hot soak.

Buying a Hot Tub and the health benefits of hydrotherapy

Is buying a hot tub worth it?

It is hard to know whether a hot tub is a good investment for you, personally.  That depends on your health issues, finances, and a whole host of other factors.  However, you don’t have to spend a fortune on installing a hot tub in your home.

There are many inflatable hot tubs on the market that are easy to assemble and not too expensive.  Many of them are easy to assemble and simple to operate.  This allows you to adjust the temperature, set the jets to your own liking, and even move the hot tub around if necessary.  Portable hot tubs are also easy to take with you when you rent that mountain cabin with your spouse for the week!

Hot Tub Safety Tips

Hot tubs are a great addition to your healthy lifestyle, however, you need to use them with care.  Staying in them too long or using them under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not end well.  No reason to ruin all those hot tub health benefits by passing out in one and drowning! I am going to assume for now that you are using a public hot tub.

  • How long should you sit in hot tub? Generally, about 20 minutes, give or take a few.  Don’t go more than 30 minutes.
  • Don’t use a hot tub if you are sick.  Whether that is head congestion or diarrhea, use it only when you feel healthy.
  • Don’t swallow hot tub water. It contains chemicals that are NOT good for you.
  • Shower or bathe with soap before entering the hot tub. Don’t put on oils, lotions, etc before using it.
  • Don’t drink alcohol before entering the hot tub or during hot tub use. I know, wine and hot tubs sound romantic, however, you are asking for trouble.
  • If pregnant, consult a physician before hot tub use, particularly in the first trimester.
  • Is it safe to have sex in the hot tub?  Well, I don’t want to ruin all your fun, however, hot tub water isn’t great for having sex in.  Rashes and yeast infections may result from your hot tub shenanigans.

Winter hot tub

What’s the best time of year to buy a hot tub?

Regular hot tub use relieves tension and stress. It also eases pain in joints and muscles, while improving circulation. It’s also just a great way to soak away your cares at the end of a stressful day.  A high-quality hot tub is an investment and you should do your research before buying one.  You will find the best hot tub deals during the winter months, when many people aren’t considering home upgrades.

If you have the space and money, buying a hot tub might make sense.  But, if all you can do is pay for a gym membership and use THEIR hot tub, it’s still worth the drive and the money you pay for a gym membership.
