On our journey to living a greener and healthier life we need to consider not only what we put INTO our bodies but what we put ONTO them as well.  Traditional beauty products often contain a number of ingredients that I honestly cannot even pronounce…and I have a science degree!  If I don’t know what it is, I am not sure I want to be slathering it all over my lips, face, and body.  I have been working towards reducing my exposure to artificial ingredients in my beauty products and making homemade lip balm was an easy step in the right direction.  I have yet to find a natural deodorant or shampoo that works well but this homemade lip balm has only a few ingredients and is simple to make.  You can upcycle containers like mint tins or tiny jelly jars or whatever you have  on hand. Or you can buy pretty lip gloss jars from Amazon. This homemade lip balm would make a wonderful holiday gift or you could get your teenager daughter and her friends together for a DIY spa party and use this as a great craft idea.  Many of the ingredients can be purchased organic from Amazon or even from your local grocery store.  Let me know what you think about this recipe if you decide to try it.  You can skip the edible glitter if you want since it isn’t exactly green or organic but it looked so pretty I just had to put a few tiny sprinkles on the finished product!

Serves: NA
Ingredients
  • 2 TBSP Coconut oil
  • 3 TBSP Beeswax
  • 3 TBSP Shea butter
  • 10 Chocolate Chips
  • 1 TBSP cocoa powder
  • ¼ tsp peppermint oil (adjust to your own personal preference)
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients in a small glass jar with loose fitting lid
  2. Place the jar in a pan of shallow water and heat over medium heat for 10 minutes, swirling gently until everything is dissolved.
  3. Pour solution into containers and let harden 1 to 2 hours
  4. Sprinkle with edible glitter if desired.

Remember that the ingredients are flexible!  If you want a firm lip gloss to put into lip gloss tubes you can add a bit more beeswax.  You can play around with the flavorings and colors of your homemade lip balm and the possibilities are endless!

  1. Mint chocolate is one of my favorite flavor combinations! I’ll definitely have to try this!

  2. Homemade lip balm? I never would have though to do this and I am a lip balm addict! Love the idea and the flavor!

  3. Wow, what an idea…and I’m a big fan of mint chocolate too.

  4. I love making my own lip balms, but I never thought about putting chocolate in it.

  5. Mint Chocolate Chip is one of my favourite flavours! I am so going to try out this recipe! YUM!

  6. Wow, I’m definitely going to have to try it. I never would have thought that homemade lip balm was so easy to make. And I absolutely love the flavor! Thanks so much for sharing :)

I cannot wait to try this with my teenager. I suspect all three kids will enjoy making these. My teenager is obsessed with avoiding petrolatum in products. She will be ALL ABOUT this recipe!

    • I find that petroleum based lip products tend to make me ‘dependent’ on them….the more I use the more my lips feel like they need it. This stuff I just use because I love it, not because my lips are stinging!

How fun is that? I love the little lip gloss tin too. I know two little girls who would totally dig this project! :)

  9. About how many servings does this make??

    • It depends on the size of your container. I filled an entire altoid tin (which would last a REALLY long time!) and I would say you would get 10 or 12 small lip gloss jars worth. It makes a decent amount!

  10. i love this!!!! I maked some of those for christmas and i’m deffinitly make some for new year!!!!

  11. Great recipe! Can I use cocoa butter instead of shea butter?

    • Im not sure, I have never made beauty recipes using cocoa butter but I would think it would be fine as long as it is a solid at room temperature.

  12. Hi – just wondering if there was an alternative to Shea Butter? It’s so expensive here.

    • I havent played with the recipe to come up with an alternative…is there any way you can buy online? The price on amazon wasn’t too bad for me.

  13. Lee Prager says:

Can you use cocoa butter in place of the shea? Do you think it would make a big difference?
    thanks
