What is Manuka Honey
So, what is Manuka honey? Let me just say that all honeys are NOT created equal. I try to get traditional honey from my local farmer or I buy Manuka honey at my local health food store.
Manuka honey comes from the nectar of the Manuka flower in the forests of New Zealand. It is a more ‘bioactive’ honey (that is my own description rather than a medical one!). Some of the health benefits of Manuka honey include
- Soothes stomach irritation
- May help treat acne and eczema.
- Has antibacterial properties
- Good for treating skin irritations, burns, cuts, etc.
- Helps improve oral health (gingivitis, etc)
- Soothes sore throats
- Boosts immunity
- Helps combat allergies
- Has moisturizing properties for skin
Why Add Manuka Honey to Homemade Lip Scrubs
Since Manuka honey is great for treating skin irritation and moisturizing skin, it makes sense to add Manuka honey to homemade lip scrubs. In addition to the Manuka honey, I also added organic coconut oil for additional moisture as well.
You can use any type of sugar you want for this Manuka honey lip scrub recipe. I used brown sugar because I liked the added color it gave to the scrub.
I chose not to use essential oils in my honey lip scrub. You CAN add essential oils, just make sure you choose only edible essential oils since this will go on your lips. You can even buy Manuka essential oil to boost the health properties of this lip scrub.
